Origin and history
The former Thuret hotel, located in Riom in Puy-de-Dôme, was erected in 1777 as a Masonic lodge under the name Les Amis de la Vertu. This building illustrates the bourgeois architecture of the late eighteenth century, with a gate on street framed by two pavilions and a facade on courtyard decorated with a monumental stone panel, originally intended for allegorical motifs or inscriptions.
After the French Revolution, the hotel lost its Masonic function and became a private residence. Its architecture combines urban elegance and bourgeois simplicity: a courtyard side, a ground floor and a mansard floor dominate, while the more modest garden side features a mezzanine. The side pavilions, on one floor, reinforce the symmetry of the whole.
Ranked a Historic Monument in 1972 for its facades, roofs, gate and entrance pavilions, the Thuret Hotel bears witness to the local history and influence of learned societies in Riom. Its current address, 3 boulevard de la République, corresponds to the original location, although its GPS location is approximate (estimated at 5/10).
