Origin and history
The manor house of Sainte-Marie-aux-English is a 15th century residence originally located in the commune of Mesnil-Mauger (Calvados), but whose GPS address currently places it in Mézidon Vallée d'Auge. This monument, partially protected since 1927, bears witness to the defensive architecture of the late Middle Ages, with a polygonal tower pierced by murderers.
Built after the Hundred Years' War on the basis of a 14th century strong house, the manor house was rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries. A wing in return for square, now disappeared, originally completed the structure. At the end of the 18th century, a new home was added, changing its original appearance.
The facade of the manor house has been listed as historical monuments since 20 May 1927. The site retains characteristic elements of Norman seigneurial residences, such as its stairway tower and its four levels. Sources also mention a location close to the former parish church of Sainte-Marie-aux-English.
The lords of the place, quoted from the fourteenth century, marked the history of this domain, although their precise names are not detailed in the available sources. The mansion reflects the architectural and social evolutions of Normandy between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
