Origin and history

The former 12th century post, located in Cloyes-les-Trois-Rivières (formerly Montigny-le-Gannelon), is a medieval guard corps listed at the Historical Monuments since 1927. This monument illustrates the military architecture of the period, typical of the defensive constructions of the feudal period in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Its strategic location, near the Loir, suggests a role of monitoring or control of river and terrestrial communication channels.

Montigny-le-Gannelon, now integrated in Cloyes-les-Trois-Rivières, was a commune marked by a rich medieval history, as also evidenced by the Roland Gate (XIIth-XIIIth century) and the Château de Montigny-le-Gannelon (XVth century). These architectural elements reflect the local importance of lords and power structures during the Middle Ages. The 12th century post, although less documented than other monuments of the region, is part of this context of fortification and territorial organization.

The region, crossed by the Loir and its tributaries, was a crossroads of exchanges and conflicts, requiring guard points such as this post. The serfs and the local population lived under the authority of the chestnuts, whose decisions could have dramatic consequences, as suggested by the legend of the chestnut of Montigny. This story, though not historical, evokes the social tensions and brutal judicial practices of the time.

In 2017, Montigny-le-Gannelon merged with other municipalities to form Cloyes-les-Trois-Rivières, thus changing the administrative framework of the monument. Despite this development, the old post remains a key vestige of the medieval heritage of Eure-et-Loir, where it is located. Its inscription in the Historical Monuments in 1927 underscores its heritage value, although its precise uses and detailed history remain partially unknown.
