Origin and history
The former Solomon Bridge Presbytery, erected in the 1870s, was financed by Dorian-Holtzer Jackson & Co., manufacturers of fake premises. These industrialists, wishing to establish a parish in the commune, built a church and this presbytery according to the plans of architect Auguste Leroux, before giving it to the municipality. The parish was officially established in 1872, marking the religious and social anchoring of the building in local life.
The building, characterized by its brick walls and granite bellows arranged in alternate seats, features architectural elements inspired by military style, such as mâchicoulis and fake braces. Its long-paned roof, covered with mechanical tiles, and its zinc staircase tower reflect a mixture of utility and ornamentation. These aesthetic choices harmonize with those of the nearby church, creating a visual unit between the two buildings.
In 1988, the presbytery was converted into a town hall, changing its vocation while maintaining its heritage status. Ranked historic monument by decree of 19 May 2003, it today bears witness to the industrial and religious history of Pont-Salomon. Its official protection underlines its importance in the architectural heritage of the Haute-Loire and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
The location of the building at 16 rue de la Mairie and its historic address recorded in the Merimée base confirm its anchoring in the urban fabric of Pont-Salomon. A communal property, it remains a symbol of the generosity of 19th century local entrepreneurs and their role in structuring collective life.
