Origin and history
The former presbytery of Notre-Dame-des-Marins Church is located on Île-aux-Marins, in the commune of Saint-Pierre (Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon). Built during the 3rd quarter of the 19th century, this wooden building bears witness to the traditional architecture of the archipelago, marked by the activity of the Great Cod Fishing. Its construction preceded 1887, when the island was an active economic and social centre, dependent on fishing.
The presbytery was redesigned in 1929, maintaining a homogeneous wooden structure. He was occupied until 1966 by the last minister of the parish and later served as a holiday colony in the 1980s before being abandoned. Ranked historic monument by decree of 12 July 2011, it belongs today to the commune. A multi-purpose room transformation project is being considered to give it public utility.
This monument reflects the daily and religious life of the residents of Île-aux-Marins, closely linked to fishing cycles. Its gradual abandonment after the 1980s coincided with the decline of the archipelago's traditional activities, marking a transition in local history. The protection in 2011 underscores its historic and architectural importance for Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon.
