Origin and history
The abbey of Mont-Saint-Martin, affiliated with the order of Prémontré, was founded in 1201 thanks to a donation by Guillaume Grébert, seigneur of Grébert and Rieussec. This knight, son of Gilles IV Grébert and great-grandson of Aegido de Greberto, offered with the agreement of his wife the use of Cartigny 6 mencauds of land between Templeux and Lampire. This gesture marked the beginning of a religious institution which became both a parish and an abbey of men, as evidenced by the map of Cassini around 1750. His name, attested as early as 1123 in the form of Mons-Sancti-Mertini, evolved into Mont-Saint-Martin-les-Goi in 1485.
Over the centuries, the abbey gained significant economic influence, receiving royalties on neighbouring villages such as Bony, Beaurevoir and Montbrehain. The buildings, destroyed in 1793 during the Revolution, were partially rebuilt in the 19th century, before suffering heavy damage during the 1918 fighting for the liberation of the area. Despite these vicissitudes, the site was listed as a historical monument in 1986, and was classified in 1992 for its remains (common, dovecote, gates) and its park, including a monumental staircase and turrets.
Today, the former Abbey of Mont-Saint-Martin, owned by an association, retains traces of its religious and architectural past. Protected elements include ruins of the western wing (abbatial logis), brick and stone enclosure walls, and historical plots. The site, located in Gouy, Aisne, Hautes-de-France, bears witness to both the power of monastic orders in the Middle Ages and the upheavals of the 18th to 20th centuries.
