Remnants (Case AE 249): inscription by order of 31 August 1995
Origin and history
The former Anatole bakery is a historic monument located in Cayenne, Guyana. Built at the end of the 19th century, more precisely during the 4th quarter of this century, it is distinguished by its remains, including ovens and a fireplace high about 10 meters. These structures, built with recovery materials, bear witness to the construction techniques of the period and the adaptation of the resources available on site.
The site was listed in the inventory of historical monuments by order of 31 August 1995. This protection applies specifically to the remains, identified under the cadastral reference AE 249. Although partially in ruins, the Anatole bakery remains a significant example of Guyana's industrial and artisanal heritage, reflecting the importance of bread production in Cayenne's daily life at the end of the 19th century.
Located at 43 avenue du Général-de-Gaulle, this former bakery is part of a changing urban context, where artisanal activities played a central role. Such buildings, often built with modest means, illustrated the resilience and ingenuity of the inhabitants in the face of the climatic and economic constraints of the region. Today, these remains offer a concrete overview of Cayenne's industrial past, while highlighting the challenges of preserving heritage in tropical environments.
