Origin and history

The former chapel of the Virgin is a religious building located in Ohlungen, in the department of Lower Rhine, in the Greater East. Built between the 3rd quarter of the 18th century and the 1st quarter of the 19th century, it is distinguished by its dedication to the Virgin Mary and its integration into the Alsatian architectural landscape. The building, located in Klose, houses a monumental cross of 1770 embedded in its northern wall, commissioned by the inhabitants of the commune.

The chapel was listed as a historical monument on 25 April 1935, a recognition of its inscription plate and stone crucifix. A communal property, it illustrates the importance of Marian devotional places in the Alsatian villages, where chapels often served as spiritual and community landmarks. Its architecture, although little detailed in the sources, reflects the local Christian traditions of the modern era.

The documents available (Wikipedia, Monumentum) underline its heritage role, but do not specify its current state (open/closed to the public) or any changes after its construction. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated to be poor (note 5/10), according to Merimée data, with an administrative address confirmed: 67170 Ohlungen.
