Origin and history
The Chapel of the Penitents of Montagnac, located in the Hérault department in Occitanie, is a religious building built between the 17th and 19th centuries. Originally integrated into the Augustine convent, it served as a place of worship until the 1960s before being abandoned, turned into a warehouse and then a dump. A flood submerged it under 1.5 m of water, accelerating its degradation. It was acquired in 2015 by Olivier Fury, who committed a restoration of a budget of €360,000 without subsidies, under the intermittent supervision of an architect of the Bâtiments de France.
Despite local support, including a letter from Brigitte Macron, in 2023 DRAC (Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs) initiated a correctional procedure for unauthorized work. The court sentenced the owner to a fine of €6,000 and ordered the partial destruction of the fittings ( waxed concrete floor, podium above the crypt, mezzanine). The monastery safeguard association then asked the public to open up to evaluate the works, while the owner appealed.
The chapel preserves a remarkable heritage: a bell of 1603 engraved "My tone calls the people" (transferred in 1982 to the church of Saint-Augustin de La Grande-Motte), 17th century gypsum altars, 18th century decorations and 19th century paintings. Classified as a historical monument since August 29, 2009, it illustrates the evolution of places of worship in Languedoc, between abandonment and heritage renaissance.
Its exact address, 21 avenue Pierre-Sirven, the square in common with the private school Puységur, former outbuilding of the convent. The GPS coordinates and its inscription at the Merimée base (Insee code 34162) confirm its anchoring in the local heritage. The accuracy of its location is estimated at 8/10, reflecting solid geographical documentation.
