Origin and history

The ancient church of the Madeleine de Noyon came into being in the 12th century, when its primitive choir was built. At the time, it served as a private chapel for Corbault Castle, a local fortified building. Its integration into the urban fabric of Noyon, near the cathedral group, reflects its early importance in the religious and seigneurial life of the city. The remains of this medieval period, although partially preserved, bear witness to a sober and functional architecture, characteristic of the castral chapels.

In the 16th century, the church underwent major changes, although the sources did not specify their exact nature. The most documented change took place in the 18th century, with the construction of a new choir disoriented between 1712 and 1713, later redesigned in the 19th century. This choir, atypical by its orientation, marks a break with medieval tradition and illustrates the liturgical and architectural evolutions of the modern era. The building, which became a parish church, played a central role in the community life of Noyon, near the cathedral buildings.

Ranked among the Historical Monuments by decree of 9 January 1996, the church is now owned by the commune. Its history reflects the successive strata of the city: first linked to a seigneurial power (Corbault Castle), then integrated into the parish network, before becoming a protected heritage. The approximate location (3 Rue Saint-Antoine) and the cartographic accuracy considered "passable" (note 5/10) highlight the challenges of its conservation and enhancement in the contemporary urban landscape.
