Origin and history
La Font de l'Oli is an ancient oil fountain located in Gabian, Herault. This 18th-century monument takes the form of a small stone building, built to capture an oil source known since Roman times. The site was used for therapeutic purposes during the Middle Ages and the modern era, before the source dried up in the early 19th century.
The building was erected at the end of the 18th century at the initiative of the Bishop of Béziers, Bausset de Roquefort. It overcomes a network of underground pipelines and basins designed to collect oil. The well-known source lost its flow shortly after the building was built, marking the end of its therapeutic use.
Ranked a Historic Monument in 2016, the Font de l'Oli is now owned by Gabian municipality. Its modest architecture and its history of early oil exploitation make it a rare example of past medical and technical practices. The exact location of the site, near the Pouzolles road, remains approximate according to available data.
In modern times, natural sources such as Gabian's were central to local care. The bishops, often patrons, financed facilities to value these resources, reflecting the importance of therapeutic beliefs and water systems in rural societies. These facilities also served as gathering places, combining empirical medicine and religious practices.
The registration of the Font de l'Oli as Historic Monuments in 2016 underscores its heritage value. Although the source is dry, the building and its underground facilities offer unique lighting on the techniques of fluid capture before the industrial era. The site remains a local example of the old regime's ingenuity to natural resources.
