The former officiality and the porch of the bishopric (disappeared) (Cd. CR 113): classification by order of 10 October 1991
Origin and history
The former officiality of Le Mans is an 18th century building, classified as a historical monument since 1991. Located in Place du Cardinal-Grente, it is joined to the Psalette, another emblematic building of the city. Its location rests on the remains of an ancient Gallo-Roman rampart, reflecting the historical stratification of the site.
The monument, with the missing porch of the bishopric, was protected by ministerial decree on 10 October 1991. This ranking underscores its heritage importance, linked to its architecture and its integration into the urban fabric of Le Mans. Contemporary projects evoke its possible conversion into a heritage centre, although this information remains to be confirmed.
The location of officiality, in the immediate vicinity of the cathedral and in the historical heart of Le Mans, reflects its past role in ecclesiastical administration. The site, marked by successive occupations since Antiquity, also illustrates the urban evolution of the city, between Gallo-Roman heritage and modern development.
