Origin and history
Old gym The Roubaisienne was built in Roubaix during the last quarter of the 19th century, by municipal decision taken in 1876. This monument is distinguished by its vast central space surrounded by a gallery, covered with a metal frame, and its preserved decor. It illustrates the emergence of public sports facilities under the Third Republic, a period marked by the promotion of physical education and collective activities.
The hall, classified as a Historical Monument by order of 12 May 1997, constitutes an exceptional architectural testimony of that time. Its structure, combining functionality and aesthetics, reflects the hygienist and social ambitions of northern industrial cities. Owned by the commune of Roubaix, it is located at 5 rue Chanzy, although approximate GPS coordinates also place it near the boulevard du Général de Gaulle.
The building embodies the legacy of local public policies aimed at improving health and social cohesion through sport. Its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments highlights its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its role in the urban history of Roubaix. Available sources (Monumentum, Mérimée base) confirm its status as a communal good and its potential openness to contemporary uses, although the precise modalities (visits, rentals) are not detailed.
