The former sub-prefecture in full (Case AD 325): registration by order of 2 April 2003

Origin and history

The former sub-prefecture of Narbonne is a building built in the second half of the eighteenth century, originally conceived as a mansion. Its U-shaped plan, organised around a closed court of honour, reflects the architectural codes of the time. A basket handle portal, decorated with pilasters and pierced with two bays, marks the main entrance. The facades, with the exception of the one on courtyard, have little prescription, with a square floor, a high floor and a ground floor. The main façade, rhythmized by four spans, highlights a central body in light protruding framed tables.

In the 19th century, the building houses the sub-prefecture, a function that it preserves almost throughout this century. The interior, little modified, concentrates its decorations in the square floor, with notable rooms such as a music salon with a superior gallery, two living rooms and a dining room. The spatial distribution revolves around a vestibule leading to a stairwell, while a service yard, lined with pavilions and accessible by a porch, completes the whole. The building, registered with the Historical Monuments in 2003, is now owned by the municipality.

The east facade, framed by two pavilions, overlooks a service courtyard accessible by a porch covered with a terrace. The main entrance, located to the north, serves a vestibule where the stairwell starts. Despite minor changes, the interior distribution has retained its original layout, highlighting the coherence of the original architectural project. The protected elements include the entire building, as evidenced by the registration order of 2 April 2003.
