Origin and history
The former hotels of Girardin and Luzy, located at Puy-en-Velay in the department of Haute-Loire, today constitute a convent complex known as the convent of the nuns of Saint-François. These two private hotels, partially built at the beginning of the seventeenth century, were assembled to form this convent. Their architecture reflects the styles of their time, with both Renaissance and classical influences.
The gate of the tower and the corbelled gallery of the inner courtyard are the only elements protected by historical monuments, inscribed by decree of 23 September 1949. These parts illustrate the refined craftsmanship of the era: the tower door, decorated with a mascaron and a circular pediment, and the gallery, supported by a shell vault and protruding crows, bear witness to remarkable architectural know-how.
The hotel of Girardin is distinguished by its rectangular structure and its stair turret, while the hotel of Luzy has a polygonal staircase tower, the door to which evokes the beginning of the sixteenth century. Galleries with tense arches, now glazed, once linked the two buildings. These architectural elements reveal a stylistic transition between Renaissance and classicism, typical of the aristocratic constructions of the region.
The ensemble is now owned by an association. Although some areas are protected, the general state of conservation and public accessibility (visits, room rental) are not specified in the available sources. The exact address, 6 rue Saint-Mayol, places the monument in the historic heart of Puy-en-Velay, a city marked by its religious and medieval heritage.
