Origin and history

The malouinière de la Ville Bague, located in Saint-Coulomb en Ille-et-Vilaine, was built in 1715 by Guillaume Eon, nephew of Julien Eon, a family of wealthy Malouin traders. The estate replaced a more modest mansion of the seventeenth century, of which the dovecote, the chapel (1690) and the walls remain. Property of the Eon families, Magon de la Chipaudière, then Penfentenyo de Cheffontaines, it was abandoned during the Revolution before being restored in the 19th century.

The chapel Sainte-Sophie, built in 1690 by Julien Eon and consecrated in 1695, is semi-enclosed with two entrances: one for the family, one for the villagers. Degraded in the 20th century (used as a potato shed), it was restored by the Bâtiments de France, maintaining its inshell ceiling of inverted ship and its 18th century altarpiece.

The dovecote, originally an orangery, was raised in 1715 after the anomaly of Guillaume Eon, with 320 bolts (symbols of nobility). The park, ravaged by tornadoes in 1987 and 1999, was restored by Jacques and Madeleine Chauveau (owners since 1975), who also restored its radiance to the malouinière, classified as a Historic Monument in 1981.

The large living room is home to an exceptional panoramic wallpaper (1820, Manufacture Dufour and Leroy), representing L-Arrived from Pizarre to the Incas. Ordered by the Marquis de Cheffontaines on his return from exile, this rebutted paper, restored by the Fine Arts, is classified as a Historical Monument. Sold in 1972, the work was bought in 1976 and resettled.

The malouinière illustrates the golden age of the Malouin shipowners, with period furniture including privateer weapons. The facades, roofs, office, living room, chapel, dovecote and well have been protected since 1981. The 4-hectare park, lined with walls, combines traces of French gardens (XVIIIe) and landscaped landscaping of the 19th, registered in 1992.

Today, a private property that can be visited by appointment, the City Ring bears witness to Breton maritime heritage, combining noble architecture, family history and rare decorative art.
