Origin and history

The Anglican Church Holy Trinity Church, located on Rue de la Buffa in Nice, was built between 1860 and 1862 by British architect Thomas Smith in a neo-Gothic style. It replaces a first building erected after 1820, when the parish was placed under the jurisdiction of the bishop of London. Its stained glass windows, made by the Atelier Lorin de Chartres, and its adjoining cemetery testify to its historic anchoring in the local Anglican community. The church benefited from a restoration in 2012, supported financially by the Alpes-Maritimes departmental council.

At the same time, the large American community of Nice obtained the creation of an episcopal parish in 1873 under the name of Holy Spirit Church. In 1885, she acquired land in the English section of the Croix de Marbre, where London architect W.G. Abershon built between 1886 and 1888 a new church and a presbytery. The stained glass windows, offered by wealthy parishioners, were ordered from Clayton and Bell. The ensemble, passed to the Protestant Church of Nice in 1974, today retains a landscape atmosphere typically English, characteristic of the winter city of the late nineteenth century.

The church, classified as Monument Historique by decree of 6 November 2020, fully protects its building, its decorations, its furniture, as well as the facades and roofs of the rectory. Its official address, 11 rue de la Buffa, makes it a major architectural and cultural landmark of Nice, reflecting the British and American heritage in the region. Sources also mention its integration into heritage bases such as Mérimée and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Inventory.
