Origin and history

The former shops of La Samaritaine de Luxe, located in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris, were built at the beginning of the 20th century to cater to an easy clientele. This project was initiated by the founders of the Grand Magasins de la Samaritaine, Ernest Cognacq and Marie-Louise Jay, after the success of their main sign located near Pont-Neuf. They entrust the creation of this new store to architect Frantz Jourdain, assisted by Georges Bourneuf, thus marking a strategic extension of their commercial empire.

The work stowed from 1914 to 1916, despite the context of the First World War, and the store was opened in January 1917. The building was distinguished by its innovative architecture, thanks in particular to a large spiral staircase incorporating elevators in its structure. This technical detail reflected a rare modernity for the era, combining aesthetics and functionality for a luxurious customer experience.

In 1986, the building was converted into an office and commercial building, losing its original vocation. Despite this transformation, some remarkable elements, such as the façade of the 27 boulevard des Capucines, the interior staircase and its elevator, were protected by a registration order in 1981. These remains still bear witness to the architectural and commercial ambition of its founders.
