The remaining span of the guard corps (ca. 26-18): inscription by order of 9 May 1988
Origin and history
The former guard corps of the Jewish Gate is a military building built in the second half of the 18th century in Strasbourg. Located at 3 rue Pierre-Bücher, it is a typical example of the defensive urban infrastructure of that time. The building, now partially preserved, bears witness to the military organization of the city under the Old Regime.
Ranked a historic monument in 1988, this guard corps is part of the architectural heritage of Strasbourg. Protection specifically concerns the remaining span, emphasizing its historical importance and conservation status. Owned by the municipality, it illustrates the role of guard corps in monitoring urban access.
At the time of its construction, Strasbourg was a fortified city integrated into the Kingdom of France since 1681. The guard corps, like that of the Jewish Gate, were used to control entrances and exits, while symbolizing royal authority. Their presence also reflected the geopolitical tensions of the region, marked by its border history between France and the Holy Empire.
