Origin and history
The former Pons House, located in Mende en Lozère, is an emblematic building of civil architecture from the mid-17th century, partially rebuilt in the 18th century. Built on previous foundations, it retains structural elements of the previous construction, while integrating stylistic innovations specific to its time. Its street location, opening on a backyard, reflects the bourgeois urban planning of the city under the Old Regime.
The monument is distinguished by the quality of its structure and especially by its interior decorations, including a ceiling painted on the second floor. The latter, dating from the reconstruction of the seventeenth century, imitates a marquetry with bold geometric motifs. The beams, decorated with painted rinsels, and the paneling evoking the ring or the walnut magnifying glass, bear witness to a rare artisanal know-how for the region. These decorative elements, exceptional in their preservation, offer a valuable insight into the living environment of the Mendeois bourgeoisie.
Filed by order of 22 November 2013, the hotel is now owned by the municipality of Mende. Its state of conservation and its architectural characteristics make it a major witness to the heritage of Lozeria, illustrating both the artistic influences of the period and the social status of its former occupants. The location of the building, at 10 rue Basse, in the heart of the city, highlights its anchoring in the historic urban fabric.
The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated at 6/10, indicating a satisfactory match between cadastral data and available GPS coordinates. Although information on its current accessibility (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified in the sources, its listing as Historic Monuments guarantees strict heritage protection, thus preserving its authenticity for future generations.
