Origin and history

La Porte de Travailan, located in the commune of Laborlan (Vaucluse), is a vestige of the medieval fortifications of the region. Built in the 12th century, it bears witness to the defensive architecture of that period, marked by stone structures designed to protect villages from invasions or local conflicts. Its designation as Historic Monuments in 1933 underscores its heritage importance and its remarkable state of conservation for a work of this period.

Fortifications such as that of Laborlan played a central role in the organisation of villages in the Middle Ages. They served not only as protection, but also as a symbol of power for local lords or village communities. In a region such as Provence, marked by trade and political tensions, these gates controlled access and strengthened the cohesion of clustered habitats.

Their presence reflects a rural society organized around collective defence and agricultural activities, dominant at that time.
