Origin and history

The Castellas archaeological site, located in Cailar in the Gard department, is a protohistoric habitat whose remains are spread over several plots. The latter, identified by specific cadastral numbers, were protected by a registration order in June 2022. The site deliberately excludes the plot of the communal cemetery, stressing a desire to preserve specifically the traces of the ancient occupation.

This type of protohistoric site suggests a human occupation dating back to an ancient period, although exact dating is not specified in available sources. In the regional context of Languedoc-Roussillon (now Occitanie), protohistoric habitats were often linked to agricultural, artisanal or defensive activities. Their location, like that of Castellas, could be strategic, close to communication routes or natural resources.

These sites play a key role in understanding the lifestyles and social organization of the people of the time, although the details specific to this monument remain to be studied further.
