Origin and history

Arromanches 360 is a circular cinema located on the heights of the cliffs of Arromanches-les-Bains in Normandy. This modern monument dominates the remains of the artificial port Mulberry B, built by the Allies in June 1944 to facilitate the landing of heavy equipment after D-Day. The film features the 100 days of the Battle of Normandy, from preparations to the liberation of Western Europe, using archival images and reconstructions.

The Mulberry B port, assembled offshore of Arromanches, played a key role in the Allied logistics, allowing to land up to 20,000 tons of equipment per day. Today, a few concrete caissons, called Phoenix, remain at sea and bear witness to this technical feat. The Arromanches 360 cinema, inaugurated much later, completes the Museum of the nearby Disembarkation by offering an immersive experience on this major historical episode.

The town of Arromanches-les-Bains, the seaside resort of Calvados, was chosen for its strategic location during Operation Neptune. Unlike other areas of the Disembarkation, the beach of Arromanches was relatively spared on 6 June 1944 to preserve the infrastructure necessary for the construction of the port. Today, this site is a must-see place, attracting visitors from all over the world.

The current film, directed by Tempora and the Caen Memorial, highlights the military and human stakes of the Battle of Normandy, which extended from June 6 to September 12, 1944. He also highlighted the role of the Normans, who lived three months of fighting on their soil. Cinema is part of an educational and commemorative approach, funded by the Normandy Region.

Nearby, other monuments recall local history, such as the Memorial Royal Engineers, dedicated to British soldiers, or the Notre-Dame-des-flots statue, erected in 1911 to commemorate a naval battle of the First Empire. These elements reinforce the historical and tourist character of the Arromanches-les-Bains, where maritime heritage and the memory of the Second World War combine.
