Origin and history
The arsenal of Neuf-Brisach is a military building built in the 1st quarter of the 18th century, in the fortified town of Neuf-Brisach, Alsace. It consists of two bodies of buildings arranged in squares around a courtyard, with a monumental porch in carved sandstone, with a arch in full hanger and a pediment. Originally, it served as a warehouse and repair shop for weapons, reflecting its logistical role in Vauban's stronghold. The facades, sober, are marked by corner chains and bandages, while the hipped roofs were once garnished with sitting dogs.
Ranked a historic monument since 1932 (inscription of facades on street and courtyard), the arsenal suffered extensive damage during the 1945 bombings, which destroyed much of its interior structure and roof. Today, only the entrance porch and façade on the square remain in their original condition. The rear part, heavily transformed (enhanced walls, modified openings), now houses garages and mechanical workshops. The building thus bears witness to the successive adaptations of a military heritage to civilian uses.
Located at 2, Place de l'Arsenal, the building occupies a strategic angle of the Place d'Armes de Neuf-Brisach, a new city founded ex nihilo under Louis XIV to strengthen the eastern border of the kingdom. Its utility architecture, without superfluous ornamentation, met the functional needs of an active garrison. The post-Second World War changes, although altering its authenticity, illustrate the resilience and re-appropriation of this heritage by the inhabitants.
The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) underline its importance in the network of historical monuments of the Upper Rhine, while noting the limited accuracy of its geographical location (level 5/10 according to Monumentum). No information is provided on any current tourist visits or uses.
