Origin and history

The workshop of Claude and François Stahly, located in Crestet in the Vaucluse, was designed in 1966 as a versatile space: residence, creative workshop and exhibition hall. This project, initiated by sculptor François Stahly and his wife Claude, weaver, was carried out by their son, architect Bruno Stahly. The building, structured around two patios, is distinguished by its reinforced concrete frame, reflecting a geometric and functional approach in harmony with the artistic work of its sponsors.

The whole was first registered as a historical monument by order of 8 June 1988, before a new order of 8 July 2022 replaced the previous one by extending protection to the entire site. The built parts were then closed by order of 16 November 2022. Today, after a complete rehabilitation, the workshop serves as a contemporary art centre, hosting artists' workshops, exhibitions and conferences, thus perpetuating its original vocation as a place dedicated to creation.

The site includes several remarkable elements: the house-workshop, the white house, the house of the cisterns, the twin entities (or mill), a wooden chalet, as well as a green theater. These buildings, spread over specific cadastral plots, illustrate a landscaped and architectural integration designed to promote both artistic work and community life. The architecture, signed Bruno Stahly, dialogue with the works of François Stahly, creating a coherent set where art and habitat are combined.

Originally privately owned, the workshop is now partially managed by the municipality of Crestet. Its official address, 830 chemin de la Verrière, and its ranking among historical monuments make it a major testimony of the architecture and art of the twentieth century in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The site is also labeled "Twentieth Century Heritage" in the department of Vaucluse, strengthening its heritage importance.
