Origin and history

The Albe-Sabadel potter shop, located in Saint-Jean-de-Fos, Herault, is a historic monument registered since 2005. This place illustrates five centuries of traditional ceramic production, with remarkably preserved elements such as its oven, well and various tools related to pottery activity. The workshop, completely protected, offers an authentic overview of the local craft techniques of the 19th century, when it was active.

The location of the workshop at 11 Avenue du Monument is documented in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 34267, attached to the commune of Saint-Jean-de-Fos. Although geographical accuracy is considered poor (note 5/10), the address corresponds to a site still identifiable today. A communal property, the workshop embodies the industrial and artisanal heritage of Occitanie, while raising the question of its current accessibility to the public.

The listing of Historical Monuments in 2005 underlines the importance of this site as a material witness to the economic and social life of the region. The protected elements, including the entire workshop and its buildings, reflect pottery activity rooted in the territory since the Middle Ages. This ranking aims to preserve a craft know-how that is now gone, while providing educational support for future generations.
