Origin and history
The inn Saint-Georges de Herisson, located in Pougne-Hérisson, is in fact an old seigneurial chapel built around 1200. This medieval monument, close to the local castle, was initially a parish church dependent on Bourgueil Abbey. Its architecture is distinguished by a five-sided bedside, supported by four foothills, and a nave surmounted by a campanile. The vaults, typical of the last gothic period, are based on compound pillars, while the abside has a six-quarter cross-section.
The chapel, now decommissioned, was partially protected by a decree of inscription in 1990, specifically covering the two spans of the choir. The building, owned by the commune, preserves remarkable architectural elements such as the four-district dogive cross-section in the first span of the choir. Its present state and precise use (visit, rental, etc.) are not detailed in available sources, but its history remains linked to local religious and seigneurial influence in the Middle Ages.
The location of the building, in the Deux-Sèvres department (New Aquitaine region), is attested with an accuracy deemed satisfactory (note 7/10). The exact address, 5039 Herisson in Pougne-Hérisson, corresponds to the data of the Merimée database, confirming its anchoring in the historical heritage of the municipality, marked by the Insee code 79215.
