Origin and history

The Aubespin mansion, located in Monsaguel in the Dordogne department (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), is a building probably dating back to the 15th century, with subsequent developments in the 16th and 17th centuries. Today, only the main house remains, organized according to an L-shaped plan and flanked by two angle towers ensuring a defensive function. The cadastre of 1823 reveals the past existence of two other buildings: a building in square with an oven to the northwest and a barn to the southeast, all girded by a wall of enclosure.

The mansion was owned by the Laurie family from the 12th century until the French Revolution. Its elaborate defensive system seems to be linked to the wars of Religion, a period during which religious tensions demanded appropriate fortifications. During the Hundred Years War, the Monsaguel region, then attached to the Biscay, was a place of resistance against the English, as evidenced by the action of Count Nodon de Montbaron. The house, registered as a historical monument in 2009, illustrates centuries of local history, marked by conflicts and architectural adaptations.

The entire manor house, including the remains of its barn and plated ground, was protected by order of 9 March 2009. The available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, underline its heritage importance in the landscape of the historic houses of Dordogne. Its architecture reflects both a residential and defensive vocation, characteristic of the manor houses of this time in Aquitaine.
