Ground floor of the façade: inscription by decree of 19 September 1928
Origin and history
The Nogent-sur-Seine audience is a historic monument located in the Aube department in the Grand Est region. Built in the 16th century, it embodies the Renaissance judicial architecture in this region. Its ground floor, inscribed as historical monuments by decree of 19 September 1928, is one of the few remains of this type still preserved in the commune.
At the time of its construction, Nogent-sur-Seine, like other cities in Champagne, was marked by a hierarchical social organization where public buildings, such as audiences, played a central role in the administration of justice and the regulation of local conflicts. These buildings often reflected seigneurial or communal authority, while serving as a gathering place for civil and criminal affairs. The audience, by its function, was a symbol of public order and local governance, essential in a society where justice was a pillar of social cohesion.
