Origin and history
The cemetery cross of Aulnay is a 14th century religious monument located in the cemetery of the commune of Aulnay, Charente-Maritime. This calvary, of modest dimensions, rests on a square base and has four sides each decorated with a statue. These sculptures, worn by leafed capital columns, are sheltered under finely worked dais. The summit is crowned with a patted cross, characteristic of Gothic art, pierced in its center of an obvious.
Classified as historical monuments by decree of 20 March 1929, this cross bears witness to the importance of Christian symbols in medieval funeral spaces. Its architectural structure, combining elegance and sobriety, reflects the craft techniques of the period. The monument, owned by the commune, remains accessible in the local cemetery, near Saint Peter's Church, highlighting its anchoring in the religious and communal heritage.
Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum bases, specify its exact location at 280 Avenue de l'Eglise, in an area marked by a Christian architectural tradition. Although its geographical accuracy is estimated to be satisfactory a priori (level 6/10), no recent change in its location is mentioned. Its conservation status and role in local commemorative practices are not detailed in the documents consulted.
