Ossuaire (cad. 3 50): registration by order of 23 November 1987

Origin and history

The Ossuary of Bérig-Vintrange is a historical monument located in the municipality of the same name, in Moselle (Great East region). Built during the 2nd quarter of the 18th century, it bears witness to the funeral and religious practices of the time. This type of building, often linked to churches or cemeteries, was used to preserve the bones exhumed during reinhumation, a common practice in Christian communities to free space in burial places.

Ranked as a Historical Monument by decree of 23 November 1987, the ossuary is now owned by the municipality of Bérig-Vintrange. Although its location is approximate (noted 6/10 in detail), it remains a notable architectural and cultural vestige of the local heritage. Ossuaries, common in rural areas, also reflected the collective management of death and the central place of the Church in the daily life of villages in the 18th century.

Their presence reminded the faithful of the fragility of life and the importance of prayer for the dead.
