Mérovingian altar, in the church: inscription by decree of 5 February 1937
Origin and history
The Merovingian altar of Rognes is a religious vestige located in the church of the commune of Rognes, in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône. Ranked a Historical Monument by decree of 5 February 1937, it represents a rare example of sacred art of the Merovingian period in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Its precise location, at 34 Rue de l'Eglise, is estimated with average accuracy (level 5/10).
The Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, during the Merovingian period (Ve-VIIIth centuries), was marked by a transition between late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The altars of that time, often integrated into later churches, served as liturgical supports and symbolized the progressive Christianization of local populations. These monuments also reflected the religious and social organization of rural communities, where the church played a central role in everyday life.
