Building known as the Front-Porte du Croux: classification by order of 31 March 1916
Origin and history
The Avant-Porte du Croux is a military building located in Nevers, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Built in the 1st quarter of the 15th century, it is part of the remains of the medieval fortifications of the city. Its architecture is characteristic of the defensive structures of this period, designed to strengthen access to cities.
The building is located on Rue de la Porte du Croux, upstream of the main gate of which it was an advanced element. It was classified as historical monuments by order of 31 March 1916, thereby recognizing its heritage importance. Today it bears witness to the urban and military history of Nevers.
The Nevers region in the 15th century was marked by feudal social organization and economic activities related to agriculture, river trade (the Loire being close) and handicrafts. Fortifications, such as the Front Gate of the Croux, played a key role in protecting residents and regulating city entrances, reflecting the political and military tensions of the time.
