Origin and history
Charleville City Hall, often called "municipality", is located on Ducale Square, in the heart of Charleville-Mézières. Although its historic name is "city hall", it now serves as an annex to the main town hall and hosts various municipal services. The building, built in the 17th century, was classified as historical monuments in two stages: first by a decree of 10 October 1942 for the building of 3 Place Ducale, then by a decree of 12 August 1945 for that of 1 Place Ducale. This classification includes all the buildings in the square, highlighting their collective heritage value.
It must not be confused with the city hall of Mézières, formerly an independent commune before its merger with Charleville. The latter, located opposite the Prefecture of the Ardennes, was labeled "Heritage of the 20th century" before being inscribed in the historical monuments by a decree of 7 July 2022. The two buildings thus illustrate distinct architectural periods: the seventeenth century for Charleville City Hall, and the twentieth century for Mézières, reflecting the urban and administrative evolution of the city.
The Ducale Square, on which the Town Hall stands, is a remarkable architectural complex, typical of 17th century urban planning. The successive protections (1942 and 1945) bear witness to the importance attached to the preservation of this heritage, both for its historical and aesthetic interest. Today, the building remains a symbol of local history, while playing an active role in municipal management.
The available sources, including Wikipedia and the Merimée base, confirm its status as communal property and its precise location (1 and 3 place Ducale). Although the details of its current use (visits, events) are not explicitly mentioned, its ranking and location make it a central place in the Charleville-Mézières heritage landscape.
