Origin and history

The Town Hall of Ajaccio occupies a large rectangular plot in the heart of the city. Its interior organization is based on a central entrance hall and a staircase of honor, both located in the basement, distributing the surrounding offices. The staircase, preceded by a vestibule supported by doric columns, leads to the upper floors. These columns, typical of neoclassical architecture, highlight the fallout of vaults and give solemnity to space.

The main façade, divided into two levels separated by an enclosing, has an entrance door in the middle of the wall surrounded by doric columns. The latter support an architrave and a frieze, while the upper level is rhythmized by ionic pilasters carrying a cornice. A lantern, sheltering the clock, crowns the whole. The expansion of 1891, to the west beyond the grid, reflects the evolution of municipal needs. The building, with its original décor, illustrates the homogeneous style of 19th-century public buildings.

Several remarkable elements have been protected since 1990, including the main façade, the entrance hall, the staircase of honour and the Napoleon lounge on the first floor. These protections highlight the heritage value of the building, both for its architecture and its role in local history. The Town Hall, owned by the municipality, remains a symbol of the municipal administration and the Ajaccio architectural heritage.

The architect Alphonse de Gisors, mentioned as a masterpiece, helped shape this emblematic building. His work reflects the aesthetic and functional canons of the public buildings of the time, combining classical rigour and adaptation to civic needs. The location of the Town Hall, on Antoine Serafini Avenue, makes it a central point in the urban landscape of Ajaccio.
