Origin and history
Roquemaure City Hall is a civil building built in the 18th century, located Place du Marché in the commune of Roquemaure, Gard department, in Occitanie region. Originally a mansion, it was transformed to accommodate municipal institutions. Its monumentally inspired façade is distinguished by two floors on the ground floor, with a noble floor marked by higher windows and a pediment above the central entrance. This architectural ensemble reflects the classical civil style of the time.
Ranked as historic monuments since 6 December 1949 for its facade and roof, the building also houses remarkable furniture. Twelve 18th-century sofas and armchairs, as well as panelling, a fireplace and a console of the same period, were classified as historical monuments on 26 August 1927. These elements testify to the refinement of the bourgeois interiors of the Ancien Régime and their preservation in a public setting.
The location of the town hall on a central square highlights its historic role as a place of power and assembly for the community. Its architecture, typical of private hotels converted into public buildings, illustrates the urban and administrative evolution of French cities in the 18th century. Today, it remains a symbol of local heritage and an active place in municipal life.
