Origin and history

Bagens Castle is mentioned from the map of Cassini and the Napoleonic cadastre under the name Bagen. These documents attest to a pre-existing construction on the site, although its exact nature remains unknown. The present castle, in the style of Restoration, was commissioned in 1852 by the Viscount of Clauselles, Gaspard de Fornier, heir to a majorate under the Restoration. Its construction spread out until 1870, incorporating ancient elements while adding a pleasant garden, reflecting the aristocratic tastes of the time.

The park, romantic style, extends over three hectares and is preceded by an alley of lime trees. It includes a 19th-century greenhouse, a vegetable garden, an orchard, and a stream added in 1991. In 1990, landscapers Arnaud Maurières and Eric Ossart renovated the garden, modernizing its appearance while preserving its historical character. Today, the estate belongs to the Viscount of Courrèges d'Ustou, perpetuating its architectural and landscape heritage.

The building itself is distinguished by its rectangular three-storey structure, covered with slates, and its white-coated facades, pierced with many windows. Inside, a long vestibule and marked floors show a concern for the typical detail of the era. The castle thus illustrates the evolution of aristocratic residences between medieval heritage and 19th century innovations.
