Origin and history
Bain-Bœuf is a stone building located in L'Éperon, on the commune of Saint-Paul, in La Réunion. Built in the 20th century, it was used to wash beef used to transport sugar cane to the nearby sugar factory. This monument illustrates the importance of farming and the sugar industry in the local economy.
The building has been listed as a historical monument since 17 December 2015 and is awarded the 20th century heritage label. Its operation was linked to the water management of the Saint-Gilles ravine, which fed sugar plants, including that of the Éperon, via a pump and channel system. This hydraulic system also supplied the Bain-Bœuf.
In the early 1950s, several enclosures were visible around the site, showing intense activity associated with cane harvesting. The carts drawn by the oxen were then transported to the sweets, like Savanna's. This heritage reflects the agricultural and industrial organization of La Réunion in the 20th century.
