Origin and history
The bakery located at 14 avenue de Villars in the 7th arrondissement of Paris is an architectural and artisanal testimony of the early twentieth century. Installed around 1900 by the Chevenot house, native to Montrouge (Hautes-de-Seine), it is distinguished by its preserved interior decor, composed of mirrors, tiles of faience and a painted ceiling. The latter represents a stylish sky, adorned with a swallow and a butterfly, decorative elements typical of the craft art of the era. The place illustrates the attention paid to the aesthetics of Parisian shops at the turn of the century, mixing utility and beauty in a daily space.
The interior decoration of the bakery, including the earthenware and the ceiling, was protected by a registration order under the Historic Monuments on 23 May 1984. This official recognition underlines the heritage value of the ensemble, both for its state of conservation and for its representative character of the Parisian bakeries of the early twentieth century. The Chevenot House, the originator of this decor, is mentioned as a decorator, although little additional information is available on its activity or other achievements.
The location of the bakery, in the heart of the 7th arrondissement, a district that was then undergoing urban and social transformation, reinforces its historical interest. At that time, Paris experienced a boom in local shops, often decorated with care to seduce a wealthy and bourgeois clientele. The tiles of earthenware, hygienic and decorative materials, become a symbol of modernity in food spaces, while the painted motifs, like those of this bakery, reflect a search for escape and poetry in everyday life.
