Origin and history

The bakery located at 29 rue des Francs-Bourgeois in the 4th arrondissement of Paris is an architectural and artistic testimony of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its heritage interest lies mainly in its interior decor and its front, protected since 1984. The painted ceiling, dating from the late 19th century, and the front of the early 20th century illustrate the know-how of the artisans of the time, with emblematic representations of water and windmills, traditional symbols of the bakery.

The interior decor is the work of Albert Raybaud, a Parisian decorator, and the house Benoist et Fils. These artistic elements, signed and dated, give this site a remarkable historical and aesthetic value. Although bakery activity ceased in 1992 to give way to a men's ready-to-wear shop, the preservation of these elements perpetuates the memory of a typical artisanal trade in Paris at that time.

The inclusion of the front and interior decoration in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 23 May 1984 underlines the importance of this heritage. This ranking aims to preserve a rare example of the Parisian commercial architecture of the Belle Époque, where art and crafts blended to embellish the places of daily life. The location of this monument, in the Marais, a neighborhood rich in history, further strengthens its cultural and tourist attraction.
