Former coffee room with its decor, today reception room of the public of the agency Portail-Matheron of the Caisse d'Epargne et de Prévoyance de Vallée du Rhône en Vaucluse (box DM 236): registration by decree of 10 May 1991
Origin and history
Le Bar du Centre is a former emblematic building located at 26 rue du Portail-Matheron and Place du Portail-Matheron, in the city of Avignon, in Vaucluse. Built at the end of the 19th century, it embodies the architecture and atmosphere of the café bars of this time, places of sociability and urban life. Its interior decor, typical of the period, has been preserved and bears witness to the artisanal and aesthetic know-how of the period.
Initially a café-bar room, the place was listed as historical monuments on 10 May 1991 for the richness of its decor. Today, it houses the Catherine Perera room, integrated into an agency of the Caisse d'Epargne. This change in function illustrates the adaptation of heritage spaces to contemporary needs, while maintaining their historical value.
The Bar du Centre is part of the architectural heritage of Avignon, a city marked by its medieval history and its cultural role. Although transformed, there is still a significant example of 19th century conviviality, reflecting the social habits and commercial practices of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region at this time.
