Origin and history

The Basilica of St. Urbain de Troyes, built in the 13th century, is a jewel of radiant Gothic architecture. Initiated by Pope Urban IV (born Jacques Pantaléon) on the site of his home in Troyes, his construction began around 1262. The pope, from a modest background (son of shoemaker), mobilizes exceptional financial resources to erect this monument dedicated to Saint Urbain, his patron. The building is distinguished by its stylistic unity, its marked verticality, and the abundance of its windows, reflecting the architectural innovation of the period.

The construction, rapid between 1262 and 1286, was marked by conflicts, notably with Ode de Pougy, abbess of Notre-Dame-aux-Nonnais, who opposed building on his fief. A fire in 1266 damaged the structure of the choir, delaying the work. After the death of Urbain IV in 1264, his nephew, cardinal, continued the construction. The basilica was consecrated in 1389, but the work continued until the 19th century, with major restorations to the choir and nave between 1876 and 1905.

Saint-Urbain illustrates the Gothic style radiating by its refined structure on two levels (large arcades and high bays), removing the traditional triforium. The fasciculated columns climb continuously up to the vaults, while the bows exteriorize the forces, liberating space for spectacular windows. The western gate, completed in 1905, presents a tympanum of the Last Judgment, and inside houses stained glass windows of the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, including a cycle narrating the life of Saint Urban I.

The monument also serves as a burial place, as evidenced by the funerary slabs of the 14th to 16th centuries (family La Rüe, Gui de Bosco, etc.). The 34-metre arrow, destroyed by lightning in 1761, was never rebuilt. As a basilica, the church embodies both papal patronage, medieval architectural innovation, and Champagne vitralist heritage.

Among the remarkable elements are a 13th century washbasin decorated with the coronation of the Virgin, the baptismal fonts of the 15th century, and a Virgin with grapes classified as a historical monument. The side chapels house medieval stained glass windows, such as the Visitation (XIIIe) or Marie aux raisins. The history of the basilica, linked to that of Troyes and Champagne, reflects the tensions between papal power, local aristocracy, and urban community.
