Origin and history

The Notre-Dame d'Orcival Basilica, built between 1146 and 1178 in the Puy-de-Dôme, is a masterpiece of Auvergnate Romanesque architecture. It was built to house a statue of the Virgin, reputedly carved by St Luke, attracting a growing pilgrimage from the twelfth century. This monument replaces an ancient church dedicated to Saint Stephen, and its complex bedside, decorated with polychrome decorations, illustrates the climax of local Romanesque art. The basilica is one of the five "majors" of Auvergne, alongside Notre-Dame-du-Port (Clermont-Ferrand) or Saint-Austeroine d'Issoire.

Ranked among the first French historical monuments in 1840, the basilica suffered major damage during the earthquakes of 1477 and 1490, losing its bell tower. In the 19th century, restorations (1851, 1856) preserved its structure, although some projects, such as the reconstruction of the arrow, did not succeed. The Virgin of Orcival, a walnut statue from the 12th century gilt to the leaf, embodies the type Sedes Sapientiae and escaped revolutionary destruction. Today, the site remains a place of pilgrimage, especially for the Manouches, and an intact testimony of Romanesque art.

The interior, marked by cradle vaults and stands, plays on the contrasts of light and shadow, typical of Romanesque aesthetics. The crypt, accessible by screw stairs, reproduces the plan of the choir and houses relics in martyrs. The narthex, without a west portal, suggests an unfinished project of monumental facade. Plant capitals, chipping patterns and diamond mosaics (trachyandesite) highlight the refinement of the decoration, more sober than in Issoire but just as symbolic.

The octagonal bell tower, open with bays with polychrome harpsichords, crowns the "barlong massif", characteristic of Auvergne Romanesque churches. This elongated parallelepiped, overtaking the cross-section of the transept, creates a unique vertical silhouette. The earthquakes of the 15th century and a fire (late 15th-early 16th) required repairs, such as replacing tiles with lauze. In 1894 the church was elevated to the rank of minor basilica, consolidating its heritage status.

The basilica also illustrates the links between religious power and politics: founded by the Counts of Auvergne and the Bishop of Clermont, it became priory of the Abbey of La Chaise-Dieu before 1166, then chapter in 1245. The Revolution abolished the latter in 1790, but the building, spared, regained its cult vocation in 1800. The restorations of the 20th century (1950-1960s) revealed original elements, such as the Nathex windows reopened in 2009.
