Origin and history

The Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire Basilica of Saint-Raphaël, also known as the Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire Basilica of Lépante, is a neo-Byzantine religious building. Located in the Old Port district, it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and stands out for its architecture inspired by Byzantine models. His name pays tribute to the Christian victory during the naval battle of Lepante in 1571, a landmark event in European history.

The building of the basilica was initiated in 1883 by Father Louis Bernard, parish priest from 1882 to 1889. The work was completed in 1887, the year of its inauguration. The building was officially elevated to minor basilica in 2004 by Pope John Paul II, recognizing its spiritual and historical importance.

The basilica and its outbuildings are now protected under the Historic Monuments since a decree of 2025. It is also referenced in the Mérimée and Palissy bases, as well as in the General Inventory of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. These distinctions highlight its heritage and architectural value, while preserving its heritage for future generations.
