Origin and history

The Basilica Sainte-Marie-Madeleine de Vézelay, founded in the 9th century by Girart de Roussillon as Benedictine abbey under pontifical protection, became a high medieval pilgrimage place after the arrival of the relics of Marie Madeleine in 882. Destroyed by the Normans in 873, it was rebuilt on the hill of Vézelay, where a first Carolingian church was dedicated in 878 by Pope John VIII. Its radiance increases thanks to these relics, attracting pilgrims and personalities like Bernard de Clairvaux or Louis VII.

In the 11th century, the abbey, attached to Cluny in 1058, experienced a major boom under Geoffroy's abbey (1037–1052), which exposed relics and attracted crowds. The conflicts with the bishops of Autun and the Counts of Nevers mark this period, including the intervention of Odilon de Cluny in 1027 to restore order. The reconstruction of the Romanesque nave, begun in 1120 after a fire, ended around 1140, illustrating the climax of Burgundian Romanesque art with its historic capitals and its tympan of Christ in glory.

The twelfth century saw the construction of a Gothic choir (1185–1190) under Girard d'Arcy's abbatiate, symbolizing the transition to a more luminous architecture. Vézelay became a key place for crusades, with the departures of Philippe Auguste and Richard Cœur de Lion in 1190. Ranked a historic monument in 1840, the basilica was restored by Viollet-le-Duc, who reconstructed its tympanum of the Last Judgment. Joined UNESCO in 1979, it remains a masterpiece of medieval art, animated today by the monastic Fraternities of Jerusalem.

The history of Vézelay is also marked by religious conflicts, such as the schism of 1159 where the abbey supports Pope Alexander III against the antipap Victor IV, or the secularization of 1537, replacing the monks with canons. After centuries of decline, especially after the discovery of Marie Madeleine's relics at Saint-Maximin in 1279, the basilica was rediscovered in the 19th century by Prosper Mérimée. Its 118 novel capitals, its narthex with stands, and its solar alignment with summer solstice make it a unique site, combining spiritual symbolism and architectural mastery.

The monastic outbuildings, now almost disappeared, included a still visible capitular hall, a scriptorium, and convent buildings sold as a stone quarry at the Revolution. The 120-metre-long basilica combines a Romanesque nave with arches (18.55 m high) and a Gothic choir (22 m) bathed in light, reflecting the evolution of styles and beliefs. Its tympanum of narthex, representing the apostolic mission, and its stained glass windows projecting luminous motifs to the solstice, illustrate a quest for transcendence through art and architecture.

Today, the basilica attracts nearly 830,000 visitors annually, the first monument of Burgundy. The monastic Fraternities of Jerusalem live a daily liturgical life, perpetuating its spiritual role. Classified as a World Heritage Site for its influence on Romanesque art and its history linked to Compostellan pilgrimages, Vézelay embodies both an exceptional medieval heritage and a living place of prayer and culture.

Future

The Basilica Sainte-Marie-Madeleine is one of 71 monuments and 7 portions of paths have been inscribed since 1998 on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the official title of "Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle en France".

It is on the way to Via Lemovicensis, the so-called "de Vézelay" or limousine road.
