Origin and history

The Saint-Michel-Archange Basilica of Menton, located in Place Saint-Michel in the commune of Menton (Alpes-Maritimes), is a religious monument built between the 1st quarter of the 17th century and the 3rd quarter of the 18th century. It is now protected under the title of Historical Monuments, with a partial classification as early as 1947 for the church and its chapel of the Conception, as well as an inscription in 1961 for its facades, roofs and approaches, including the Place Saint-Michel and its steps.

The building is distinguished by its parvis and its annex chapel, dedicated to Conception, which integrates into a preserved urban complex. Legal protections cover not only the building itself, but also surrounding elements such as the ground of the Place de la Conception, the homonymous street and the rise of Remembrance. These measures reflect the heritage importance of the site, both for its architecture and its role in the historical landscape of Menton.

The basilica, a property shared between the municipality and private actors, illustrates the evolution of places of worship in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Its ranking and successive inscriptions underline the desire to preserve a religious and urban heritage marked by centuries of history, from the Ancien Régime to the contemporary era. Available sources, such as the Merimée or Monumentum base, confirm its status as a central element of the chinese heritage.
