Origin and history

The Basilica of Saint-Just de Valcabrère, located in Comminges 17 km from Saint-Gaudens (Haute-Garonne), is a jewel of Romanesque art from the 11th and 12th centuries. Dedicated to the Spanish martyr Saint Just, it was consecrated in 1200 by Bishop Raymond-Arnaud of Labarthe. Its history dates back to antiquity, as evidenced by the sarcophagi of the fourth century and the numerous uses of Roman stones from Lugdunum Convenarum, the ancient Gallo-Roman town nearby. These ancient elements, integrated into its structure, underline the continued occupation of the site since the Roman era.

The monument is mentioned for the first time in the Book of Miracles of Saint Bertrand (XII century), suggesting an ancient foundation. Ranked a historic monument in 1840, it was also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998, as the Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle in France. Its 13th century portal, adorned with a tympanum depicting a Christ in majesty surrounded by the Tetramorph, and its historic capitals illustrate the Southern Romanesque art. Excavations confirmed the former funeral vocation of the site, with a Christian cemetery of the fourth century attested.

The architecture of the basilica reveals a fusion between ancient heritage and medieval innovation. The bedside, composed of a central apse and two apsidioles, dates from the 12th century, while the nave, divided into four spans, uses re-used Roman columns and capitals. The bentiers, dug in ancient capitals, and the statues-columns of the portal (Saint Just, Saint Shepherd, Saint Stephen) recall the artistic syncretism of the site. Major restorations took place in the 19th and 20th centuries, preserving this exceptional testimony of the religious and architectural history of the Comminges.

The site also preserves traces of murals and a gothic ciborium housing the relics of Saint Just and Saint Shepherd. Its role in pilgrimages to Compostela, coupled with its lapidary Roman heritage, makes it an emblematic monument of medieval Occitanie, where ancient memory, Christian faith and Roman art cross.

Future

The Basilica Saint-Just is one of the 71 monuments as well as 7 portions of paths have been inscribed since 1998 on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the official title of "Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle en France".

The Basilica was at the margin of one of the 4 classical routes (Via Turonensis, Via Lemovicensis, Via Podiensis and Via Tolosana). The pilgrims therefore had to make a detour to visit it.
