Origin and history

The Saint-Thugal Basilica of Château-Landon, now reduced to its iconic tower, dates back to the 10th century. This religious monument is part of the city's turbulent history, marked by its central role in medieval Gâtinais. The tower, classified as a Historical Monument in 1992, is one of the few remains of this period, where Château-Landon was a prosperous city, with several churches and abbeys, including that of Saint-Séverin, founded in the sixth century under the impulse of Clovis and his son Childebert I.

In the Middle Ages, Château-Landon was a royal provost and a place of pilgrimage, thanks to the relics of Saint Severin and Saint Thugal (or Tugdual), a Breton saint whose worship was established locally. The city, with its ramparts and three parish churches, was also a commercial hub, especially for sheet and building stone. The wars, like the conflicts with the English in the 15th century, however, marked its partial decline, with repeated destructions, in particular of Saint-Séverin Abbey.

The Saint-Thugal Tower, with its Romanesque architecture, illustrates the religious heritage of the city. Its ranking among the Historical Monuments underscores its heritage importance, in a region where the extraction of stone (such as the "stone of Souppes") also played a major economic role. Today, this vestige offers a tangible testimony to the medieval history of Château-Landon, between spirituality, royal power and artisanal activities.
