Origin and history

The Bastide des Brégues d'Or is a typical construction of the second half of the 18th century, located in the town of Aix-en-Provence, in the heart of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. This monument illustrates the aristocratic or bourgeois residential architecture of the period, marked by landscaped exterior spaces (gardens, terraces, rocks) and associated agricultural buildings. Its location in the Malouesse district or on the outskirts of Plaine-des-Dès reflects the choice of semi-rural sites, popular with the Aixese elites for their secondary residences.

The bastide was officially recognized for its heritage value by registration as historic monuments on 30 June 1989. This protection concerns not only the main building, but also the whole estate: cadastral plots, gardens, terraces, porches, and rocks. The exact address, mentioned in the Merimée base, places the monument at 1845 Chemin de la Plaine des Des, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. No information is available on its current use (visits, rentals, accommodation) in the sources consulted.

The historical context of its construction coincides with a period of prosperity for Aix-en-Provence, a city marked by its judicial role (Parliament of Provence) and its attractiveness for wealthy families. The bastids, such as that of the Golden Brégues, served both as resorts and as symbols of social status. Their architecture, often sober but elegant, incorporated landscape elements inspired by Italian models, adapted to the Mediterranean climate.
