Origin and history
The Bastion des Forges, located in Bouchain, Hauts-de-France, is an emblematic vestige of the city's defensive system. Built in the 16th century under Charles Quint, it bears witness to the emergence of bastioned fortifications in the Spanish Netherlands. This type of military work, characterized by prominent angles, marked a major evolution in the art of war and the protection of border towns.
The bastion was strengthened in 1687 by Vauban, a famous military engineer of Louis XIV, who added underground rooms and a powder-box. These adjustments reflect the strategic innovations of the time, aimed at adapting defences to the progress of artillery. The monument, listed in 2019, also includes fortified elements of World War II, highlighting its continuing role in military history.
Today, the Bastion des Forges is owned by the commune of Bouchain. Its location, between the street of Ostrevent, the square of 8-May-1945, and the dike of Neuville, recalls its integration into the urban fabric. Although its GPS location is approximate, there remains a tangible testimony to the conflicts and fortification techniques that have marked the region.
Fortifications such as Bouchain played a key role in protecting border territories, often disputed between kingdoms. They housed garrisons, powder reserves and surveillance systems, while providing shelter for local populations in the event of siege. Their design also reflected the cultural and technical exchanges between the Spanish Netherlands and France.
The ranking of the bastion in 2019 preserved a rare military heritage, illustrating both Charles Quint's legacy and Vauban's contributions. The elements added during the Second World War recall that these structures have often been reused over the centuries, adapted to changing defensive needs.
